Akers’ résumé should be required reading material for young soccer players. She was a four-time All-American at Central Florida. She scored 105 goals in 153 appearances for the U.S. She earned the Golden Boot as the leading scorer (10 goals, including five in one game) at the inaugural Women’s World Cup, won by the U.S. in 1991. She won a gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Summer Games and another World Cup in 1999. She was voted FIFA Woman Player of the Century, alongside China’s Sun Wen. And in 2004, Akers and Hamm were selected by soccer great Pele as the only women on his list of the 125 greatest living players.

Above all else, Akers is known in soccer circles for her relentless work ethic, for getting the most out of her size (she is 5-foot-10), strength and speed. “She always wanted more criticism,” says North Carolina head coach Anson Dorrance, who guided Akers on the 1991 World Cup squad. “She kept asking for more, and I was thinking at the time, ‘Are you kidding me?’ Any flaw I did mention, she would correct it immediately. At the last Dynamo Dresden vs St Pauli game Ultras Dynamo displayed this banner aimed at the female members of USP. Telling them to go back to the kitchen.

Somehow Ultra Femminile got hold of the banner, burnt it and told Dynamo were to stick it… (via antifascist action)

Hi Footy Queen followers!

This is Susie Grace from AikoAikoAikoAllDay and this is my first official post in this Tumblr, which I’m really excited to be sharing with you.

Here goes…

This past weekend was quite a busy one for me.

First and foremost, I worked out for the first time in over 2 months! This weekend was also the first time I have touched a soccer ball this year. And, I must say both felt really great.

I recently had surgery on my shoulder to fix a what the doctors have called is an unstable shoulder.

My shoulder first dislocated playing in a coed game about 5 years ago. I was subbing with a team I did’t know well and we were playing down 7 players to the opposing 11. I was up for the challenge, and was playing my heart out when I was running for a ball in open field and I remember thinking, “I’m faster than that girl.” I got to the ball first, tapped the ball to gain control, just as she came in on a tackle to clip my feet from under me. The next thing I knew I was in pain, awful pain but I had no idea what was hurting. I felt like I wanted to throw up, but at the same time couldn’t figure out why I could pick myself up off the field. The games was called off, and I was taken to the E.R.

Since then it has come out 9 times including once in my sleep, and one while I was dancing and trying to hit a beach ball at a Jamie Liddell show during Lollapollza a few years ago. Needless to say, it was time to get fixed.

I’m now stitched up and in the healing process. Saturday was the first day I would start to get back into shape, and I was so excited for it.

The other reason my weekend was so busy was because I booked my ticket for my new home…MAUI!!!!!!! I’ve decided to take a chance with my career and move somewhere I love, that is beautiful. I have 5 weeks until I move, and I need to get my shoulder into beach soccer and surfing shape. I really can’t wait to move, and I really can’t wait until I can play pickup soccer again. There’s definitely something missing in my life without having soccer the last few months.

turning the act of sitting into a game, italian designer emanuele magini has integrated a football net into a chair frame to create ‘lazy football’ for italian furniture manufacturer campeggi. the simple metal body of the furniture piece has widened front legs, mimicking the form of a goal net - sitters on the chair become players in a friendly game of ‘lazy’ football, requiring no real skill, just the ability to block. the design, cradling the line between sporting accessory and seating object, was on show at salone del mobile during milan design week 2012.

This looks like the perfect indoor game for a lazy, rainy day like today.

Simon Borg is probably not worth another blog post on the WWW, but here I am typing his name. I don’t have much to say about him or his comments on a recent Extratime podcast (MLS’s Podcast) that haven’t already been said, but I did want to share my two theories on why he may have said what he said.

And here are my two theories on why Borg said what he said:

Borg is an idiot. There’s no simpler way to put it.
Borg is being asked to be the agitator of the Extratime podcast group and to stir up controversy and added viewership.

Either way, what he said is not ok, and I’d imagine that most footy fans would agree.

“It’s fine if you’re a female and you want to be a super-fan. Clearly go for it, that’s your choice. But there is something to be said for how appealing that might be to the other sex. Having a woman that’s such a fan, like painting your face, tuning in to every podcast. I don’t know how many males would be into that.”

“It’s great that in Kansas City there are a lot of women in the stands, it’s great, but for the guy who wants maybe a serious relationship… If you are following just casually, but if you’re such a die-hard, I don’t know, it comes a point that it is a bit of a turn-off.”

Lots of controversy over this yesterday. Via Twitter, I saw that Women United Football Club [WUFC] will be on Extra Time podcast soon to voice the opposite opinion of female sports fans.

The new home USA kits. Since the release yesterday, there have been very strong opinions from those who like them and those who don’t, but mostly from those who don’t. There’s always a uproar when they are released, but eventually it seems like the design ends up growing on most of us. I know I felt that way about the last USMNT kits with the sash; I didn’t care for them at first, but then I loved them and now I own one.

Personally, I [SMASH] like the new kits. A LOT. [Though clearly I’m a lover of red/white hoops being an FC Dallas fan.] Not only do I like the hoops and the overall look of the full kit, I very much like that Nike and U.S. Soccer is presenting a united front with both the USMNT and USWNT wearing them.

Taken from the Nike Football Facebook page… “For the first time the USMNT & USWNT will wear the same jersey. Cast from the unifying colors of the American flag, the new USA home kit combines heritage and patriotism in a bold new design. Two teams. One jersey. United We Stand.” I love this.

Happy weekend, footy fans!

Do we have any footy fans in the Dallas [Texas] area? A friend is building a low division [aka: beginner, out of shape, or just for fun!] women’s indoor team to play at Inwood Soccer Center [Tollway & Inwood]. As of now, it looks like the games will be weeknights [possibly Tuesdays or Wednesdays] and the league should start sometime in June.

This shows how team salaries of the MLS (Major League Soccer) have grown out of control. The league started out even, both in talent and team salary. Then in 2007 the MLS allowed three designated players per team whose salaries don’t count against the team salary cap. Creating a loophole allowing big market teams to go out and buy players. Currently there are 12 teams with 23 designated players.

Lowest team salary: Columbus Crew $2,770,428

Highest team salary: L.A. Galaxy $17,229,783

It’s always frustrating when your team can’t score, but fans of German football team 1. FC Magdeburg resisted the urge to chant obscenities and decided instead to take a more constructive approach to their team’s five-match goal drought.

Carrying a banner reading “We’ll show you where the goal is!”, the fans held up neon arrows pointing at the goal throughout the match.

The unorthodox tactic may be adopted by other goal-starved supporters, as it worked - Magdeburg did score, although they eventually lost the match 2-1.

Too funny not to share.
